Abstract

The development of digital technology and the increasing use of social media have made it easier for people to access and share information. However, these conditions have also increased the risk of spreading misinformation, especially among students who are among the most active internet users. Limited ability to verify information makes students more vulnerable to believing and sharing false information. This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to the spread of hoaxes among students, examine the case of the hoax regarding the deactivation of social media by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), and explain the role of digital literacy and Civic Education in preventing the spread of hoaxes. This research employed a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were collected from official documents, scientific journals, books, academic articles, and other relevant sources. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative techniques through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the spread of hoaxes among students is influenced by low levels of digital literacy, intensive use of social media, and limited critical thinking skills in evaluating information. The hoax regarding the deactivation of social media by Komdigi demonstrates the importance of verifying information before believing and sharing it. Digital literacy plays an important role in strengthening critical thinking skills, while Civic Education contributes to developing responsible digital citizenship among students. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy through education is an essential effort to prevent the spread of hoaxes among students.
