AI POLICY

PROGRESIF: Jurnal Dakwah, Sosial, dan Komunikasi recognizes the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic research, writing, editing, translation, data analysis, and other scholarly activities. The journal permits the responsible use of AI-assisted technologies while maintaining the principles of academic integrity, transparency, originality, accountability, and research ethics.

1. Responsible Use of AI

Authors may use AI-assisted tools, including generative AI, for legitimate purposes such as:

  • language improvement, grammar and spelling correction;
  • translation;
  • improving clarity and readability;
  • generating ideas or developing research outlines;
  • assisting with coding, data processing, or statistical analysis;
  • formatting and organizing manuscripts; and
  • other appropriate technical or editorial purposes.

The use of AI must not replace the author's intellectual contribution, scholarly judgment, critical analysis, or responsibility for the research.

2. Authors' Responsibility

Authors remain fully responsible for the entire content of their manuscripts, including content produced or assisted by AI tools.

Authors must:

  • verify the accuracy and reliability of AI-assisted information;
  • check all references, citations, quotations, data, and factual claims;
  • ensure that the manuscript is original and does not contain plagiarism;
  • ensure that AI-generated content does not infringe copyright or other intellectual property rights;
  • disclose substantive use of generative AI in the manuscript; and
  • accept full responsibility for the final submitted version.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot take responsibility for the integrity, originality, and ethical aspects of scholarly work.

3. Disclosure of Generative AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI when AI has made a substantive contribution to the development of the manuscript.

The disclosure should identify:

  1. the AI tool or system used;
  2. the purpose for which it was used; and
  3. the part or stage of the research or manuscript in which it was used.

A suggested statement is:

AI Disclosure: The authors used [name of AI tool] for [e.g., language editing, translation, data analysis, or manuscript development]. The authors reviewed and verified all AI-assisted content and remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the final manuscript.

Routine use of tools for basic spelling, grammar, formatting, or reference management does not normally require a separate disclosure unless the use is substantive.

4. Prohibited Use of AI

Authors must not use AI tools to:

  • fabricate or falsify research data, results, participants, sources, or references;
  • generate fictitious citations or bibliographic information;
  • manipulate research findings or images in a misleading manner;
  • conceal plagiarism or duplicate publication;
  • impersonate authors, reviewers, editors, or research participants;
  • submit AI-generated content as entirely human-authored when disclosure is required; or
  • violate confidentiality, privacy, copyright, or research ethics.

The use of AI to create or modify images, figures, or other research materials must not misrepresent research evidence or findings.

5. AI and Research Data

Authors must not upload confidential, personal, sensitive, unpublished, or proprietary research data to publicly accessible AI systems unless appropriate authorization, security safeguards, and ethical requirements are in place.

Authors are responsible for protecting the privacy and confidentiality of research participants and other individuals whose information is used in the research.

6. AI Detection and Editorial Assessment

PROGRESIF may use appropriate technological tools or editorial procedures to identify potential plagiarism, fabricated references, inappropriate AI-generated content, or other forms of academic misconduct.

However, AI-detection results will not automatically be considered proof of misconduct. Editorial decisions will be based on a broader assessment of the manuscript, including originality, citations, research integrity, methodological consistency, and compliance with the journal's publication ethics.

7. AI Use by Reviewers

Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, unpublished research, confidential data, or other materials obtained through the peer-review process into generative AI systems or other external AI tools that may compromise confidentiality.

Reviewers may use appropriate AI-assisted tools for limited purposes only when such use does not compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or independence of the peer-review process.

Reviewers remain fully responsible for their review reports and editorial recommendations.

8. AI Use by Editors

Editors and editorial staff may use AI-assisted technologies for appropriate administrative or editorial tasks, provided that such use does not compromise manuscript confidentiality, authors' rights, reviewer confidentiality, or the independence of editorial decisions.

AI systems must not be used as a substitute for the professional judgment of editors or reviewers.

9. Editorial Decisions

The final decision regarding manuscript acceptance, revision, rejection, or publication is made by the journal's editors and reviewers, not by an AI system.

The journal does not consider the mere use of AI as grounds for rejection. Instead, the journal evaluates whether AI has been used responsibly, transparently, ethically, and consistently with scholarly standards.

10. Breach of AI Policy

Failure to disclose substantive AI use, fabrication or falsification of information using AI, plagiarism, fabricated references, violation of confidentiality, or other forms of academic misconduct may result in editorial action in accordance with the journal's publication ethics and applicable research integrity standards.

Depending on the circumstances, actions may include requesting clarification, requiring manuscript revision, rejecting the manuscript, retracting a published article, or taking other appropriate measures.

11. Policy Updates

PROGRESIF will periodically review and update this policy to reflect developments in artificial intelligence, scholarly publishing, research ethics, copyright, and international publishing standards.

Authors, reviewers, editors, and other contributors are expected to comply with the version of this policy applicable at the time of their participation in the publication process.
