Application of Kastari (Sustainable Chicken Coop) as Appropriate Technology in Keboncandi Hamlet

Optimizing household yards is an effort to support household food availability through the utilization of local resources. One approach that can be implemented is KASTARI (Sustainable Chicken Coop), a concept that integrates chicken raising with the use of yard space for crop cultivation. This study aims to describe the implementation and adaptation of the KASTARI concept as an appropriate technology for optimizing household yard space in RT 03, Keboncandi Hamlet. This study employed the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that several households in RT 03 raise chickens in their yards, while the existing chicken coops remain simple and have not yet been integrated with crop cultivation and waste management. The implementation of KASTARI in one household was carried out by adapting the coop design to the available land conditions and integrating a composting space beneath the coop. The integration provides potential for chicken waste to be managed as organic material while increasing the productive function of household yards. Therefore, KASTARI can be adapted as a simple, locally based appropriate technology with potential to optimize household yard space, improve chicken waste management, and support household food availability.
